September Edition: Chris Hemsworth reveals he almost lost his role as 'Thor' to his very own younger brother Liam

Chris is the Australian megastar who has stamped his authority over the hammer-wielding character, Thor. But Chris Hemsworth has revealed how he almost didn't land the role because of his own younger brother, Liam. The 34-year-old said he never heard back after his initial audition for the role, while Liam made it down to a five-man shortlist. He said, "I remembered reading the breakdown for Thor and it said, ‘Must be over 6'3" and 200 pounds,’ and so on. I thought, ‘Oh cool. This is the one thing that sort of fits me.’ Most of the time, I'd have to lie about my height and say I was a little shorter and so on. I'd only get cast or auditioned for the football player or something,” Hemsworth told W Magazine of the audition process for Thor. Hemsworth added, “So I thought, ‘Great. This is up my alley.’ I came into the audition with Kenneth Branagh and thought I nailed it and then never heard anything back. Months went by and then my little brother Liam was in Australia and sent a tape across and he got a call back, then another call back and then was down to the last kind of four or five people for it."

“I remember sitting in Vancouver, shooting Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. Both of them were looking at the trades at this sort of top five guys for Thor and saying, 'Why aren't you in the mix here? What happened?' I said, 'I don't know. I blew my audition I guess.’" But when news that no one on the list landed the role (including his brother) reached the former Home And Away star's manager, he made a call to bring Chris back in. His manager called [them] up and said, "You know (Liam’s) got an older brother, could we bring him back in?" He then re-auditioned in a Vancouver hotel room with his mother reading the part of Anthony Hopkins, he told the magazine. The second audition was a lot different to the first one. "I came in kind of with a little motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me," he said. "It's a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. It moved pretty quick from there, and It was cool.” He was eventually handed the gig.

He is set to reprise the role of Thor in upcoming movie 'Thor: Ragnarok', which is the third film in the saga. In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the Australian actor claimed the film is the series' most different and entertaining yet, and it's the film's new director Taika Waititi pushing it to its limits. "As soon as we got on the phone, we started talking about things we both disliked about what I'd done before, 'I get sick of this tone' or 'I get sick of this theme'", Chris told the publication. "We were laughing, going, 'Good, well any time we feel it's heading in that direction, let's just do the opposite'”.

Speaking of brotherly relationships, Thor and his half-brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), have a complicated one in the upcoming Marvel film. "They haven’t really gotten along, thanks to Loki’s mischievous spirit and devious plans. But this time around, they will be forced to rely on one another in order to defeat the villain, Hela (Cate Blanchett). The two of them are placed in such an extraordinary situation where everything is unfamiliar; that their familiarity, literally as family members, becomes important,” Hiddleston told Slash Film.

New Zealand-born Taika, 42, said working alongside Chris has been challenging and rewarding, with the Green Lantern actor saying that he feels like Chris's humour personality hasn't been utilised well enough in the past. "I knew that Chris was funny and I don't think they've exploited that enough," he said. 'Thor: Ragnarok', will be released on Nov. 3.

Liam Hemsworth as Thor? It just wouldn’t have been the same.. I think the right man was chosen for the role.
